Many of us struggle with reaching our goals, whether those goals are eating healthier, getting in shape, or finding balance in our lives. We often set intentions with our conscious mind and trust in pure willpower as the key to success. However, many of us overlook the crucial role of the subconscious mind in this journey. Imagine a person committed to losing weight. Their conscious mind focuses on healthy meal prep and workout plans. After a taxing day, however, they may find themselves collapsing on the couch with a tub of ice cream. This isn't simply a lack of willpower; it reflects the competing needs at play. The subconscious mind naturally favors immediate comfort over the long-term rewards of a healthy lifestyle. This especially makes sense due to our earliest associations with being comforted by a parent or caregiver as an infant, experiencing love and connection while being fed. In our conscious life, if we are not finding healthy ways to receive comfort and connection, then our subconscious will find a way to meet those needs even if they are unhealthy. Our subconscious is a needs-meeting machine, even if the course that it takes is not healthy or in alignment with our conscious mind. Another example of this would be a conscious desire to save money; however, the person who may have the conscious goal to save money might have a very high need for novelty and new experiences at a subconscious level that they are unaware of, and because of that, their efforts to save money are sabotaged.


The Importance of Integration


To combat self-sabotage, it's vital to balance and align the needs of both the conscious and subconscious minds. This requires understanding what your subconscious desires are and figuring out how to meet these needs while still adhering to your goals. Engaging in self-discovery can enhance this understanding, revealing how subconscious motivations shape your actions.


Mindfulness practices can effectively facilitate this integration. By slowing down and tuning into your inner thoughts and feelings, you can identify the needs influencing your behavior. Recognizing these needs allows you to build a more compassionate relationship with yourself, thus paving the way for healthier strategies.


Strategies for Aligning Conscious and Subconscious Needs


  1. Journaling: Keep a journal where you write about your thoughts and feelings. This exercise can reveal subconscious desires and fears you might not be aware of. For instance, you may discover that fear of failure is sabotaging your goal of starting a new project.
